Discover More Ways to Use Facai for a Prosperous Chinese New Year Celebration
I still remember the first time I heard about Facai during Chinese New Year celebrations at my grandmother's house. The vibrant red decorations with golden Chinese characters spelling out "发财" caught my eye, and my aunt explained how this tradition symbolizes wealth and prosperity. This year, I've been thinking about how we can expand beyond the traditional uses of Facai to make our celebrations even more meaningful. It's funny how certain traditions can take on new dimensions when we approach them with fresh perspectives - much like how I recently discovered new layers in Metaphor: ReFantazio, that brilliant RPG that consumed 80 hours of my life in the most wonderful way.
Speaking of discoveries, let me share something personal about how gaming experiences have reshaped my approach to traditions. When I played Metaphor: ReFantazio, I was struck by how its themes of hope and companionship resonated with the spirit of Chinese New Year. The game's heartfelt stories and charming characters reminded me that our celebrations aren't just about rituals - they're about connection, much like how the game's sprawling dungeons and turn-based combat system created spaces for meaningful interactions. I started thinking: what if we approached Facai traditions with the same sense of adventure and discovery that makes games like Metaphor so special?
Here's a practical idea I tried last year that worked surprisingly well. Instead of just displaying the traditional Facai decorations, I created what I called "prosperity corners" around the house. In each corner, I placed Facai elements alongside written wishes for specific family members. For my cousin who was starting college, I paired the traditional red envelopes with a small notebook about financial wisdom. The result was incredible - we ended up having the most meaningful conversations about what prosperity really means beyond material wealth. It reminded me of how Metaphor's themes felt restorative, making me reflect on the idealist I used to be and the person I'd like to become.
The kitchen became another experimental space for Facai innovations. My mother and I developed what we now call "prosperity recipes" - traditional dishes with small twists that incorporate Facai symbolism. We created dumplings shaped like ancient Chinese coins and added golden ingredients like turmeric and saffron to certain dishes. While preparing these, I found myself thinking about Atlus' signature gameplay in Metaphor and how they elevated familiar mechanics. That's exactly what we were doing - taking something traditional and making it feel fresh and meaningful again. The best part was how these cooking sessions turned into bonding experiences, much like how the game's companionship themes resonated with me.
What surprised me most was discovering how digital platforms could enhance our Facai practices. I created a family chat where we shared daily "prosperity moments" - small achievements or grateful reflections leading up to New Year's Day. This digital extension of Facai traditions brought our scattered family members closer, especially those who couldn't join physically. It captured that same earnest quality I loved in Metaphor, offering comfort and connection across distances. The chat became so popular that we've decided to continue it year-round, focusing on different aspects of prosperity each month.
The decorations themselves became canvases for creativity. Instead of simply buying ready-made Facai items, we organized family craft nights where we created our own prosperity symbols. We made paper cuttings that combined traditional Facai characters with personal symbols of what prosperity meant to each family member. My niece created one that incorporated books and graduation caps alongside the traditional wealth symbols, while my uncle made one featuring his garden tools. These personalized creations made our home feel uniquely ours while maintaining the traditional spirit.
I've come to realize that the true power of Facai lies in its adaptability. Much like how Metaphor: ReFantazio brought me back to the RPGs I grew up playing while offering something entirely new, our Facai traditions can honor the past while evolving for the present. The game's ability to make me feel lighter and somehow younger mirrors what I've experienced through these renewed traditions - there's a sense of rediscovery that's both comforting and exciting.
As we approach this Chinese New Year, I'm planning to introduce what I'm calling "prosperity partnerships" within our family. Each family member will be randomly paired with another to focus on supporting each other's definitions of prosperity throughout the year. It's inspired by how Metaphor asks players to have hope for tomorrow, the people around them, and themselves. This ongoing commitment feels more meaningful than the traditional one-time exchanges, creating lasting bonds and mutual support.
The beauty of reimagining Facai traditions is that it makes the celebration more personal and impactful. Just as my 80 hours with Metaphor left me feeling restored and hopeful, these new approaches to Facai have deepened my family connections and made our celebrations more meaningful. The traditional symbols remain, but they've become launching points for creativity and connection rather than static rituals. This Chinese New Year, I encourage you to discover your own ways to expand Facai practices - you might be surprised by how these small innovations can transform your celebration and bring renewed meaning to this beautiful tradition.
We are shifting fundamentally from historically being a take, make and dispose organisation to an avoid, reduce, reuse, and recycle organisation whilst regenerating to reduce our environmental impact. We see significant potential in this space for our operations and for our industry, not only to reduce waste and improve resource use efficiency, but to transform our view of the finite resources in our care.
Looking to the Future
By 2022, we will establish a pilot for circularity at our Goonoo feedlot that builds on our current initiatives in water, manure and local sourcing. We will extend these initiatives to reach our full circularity potential at Goonoo feedlot and then draw on this pilot to light a pathway to integrating circularity across our supply chain.
The quality of our product and ongoing health of our business is intrinsically linked to healthy and functioning ecosystems. We recognise our potential to play our part in reversing the decline in biodiversity, building soil health and protecting key ecosystems in our care. This theme extends on the core initiatives and practices already embedded in our business including our sustainable stocking strategy and our long-standing best practice Rangelands Management program, to a more a holistic approach to our landscape.
We are the custodians of a significant natural asset that extends across 6.4 million hectares in some of the most remote parts of Australia. Building a strong foundation of condition assessment will be fundamental to mapping out a successful pathway to improving the health of the landscape and to drive growth in the value of our Natural Capital.
Our Commitment
We will work with Accounting for Nature to develop a scientifically robust and certifiable framework to measure and report on the condition of natural capital, including biodiversity, across AACo’s assets by 2023. We will apply that framework to baseline priority assets by 2024.
Looking to the Future
By 2030 we will improve landscape and soil health by increasing the percentage of our estate achieving greater than 50% persistent groundcover with regional targets of:
– Savannah and Tropics – 90% of land achieving >50% cover
– Sub-tropics – 80% of land achieving >50% perennial cover
– Grasslands – 80% of land achieving >50% cover
– Desert country – 60% of land achieving >50% cover
